My name is Erin Chase.
I have 2 children with type I Chiari malformations (ACM). They also have Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) because of the ACM. Each of the boys has speech and language delays, hypersensitivity to touch, sounds, light, along with low muscle tone and vestibular hypersensitivities. They are in speech, physical and occupational therapies. My oldest is on a IEP through our local preschool. Neither of my boys has autism or has been diagnosed as being on the spectrum, despite a few "autistic like tendencies."
Early in 2008, I tried my oldest on the GFCF diet after reading about it in an SPD book. I didn't follow the diet strictly, as I struggled to find things for him to eat. I justified that he would be OK eating a cup of yogurt (as yogurt is easier to digest if you are lactose intolerant) because I just didn't have anything else for him to eat for a snack that day. The problem with this is that we didn't see any changes as we didn't follow the diet so strictly.
At the time that we tried the GFCF diet, he was drinking soy milk because I thought he had a lactose intolerance (not an allergy, as skin testing revealed he had no allergies to foods). In April 2008, we did comprehensive metabolic testing through Great Plains Laboratory. The testing revealed that both boys were sensitive to soy! But not gluten or casein. I immediately removed all soy from their diets. I still did not see improvements in their behavior or in their sensitive little digestive systems.
At the end of October 2008, I consulted with my pediatrician about my concerns with their diet. She encouraged me to try the GFCFSF diet for 3 weeks to see if there were any changes. I came up with a plan, wrote it all out, and that next week we started the GFCFSF diet.
It's working!
I've seen improved speech production, improved language output, improved BMs, decreased "beer gut" (my oldest's tummy is much smaller than it used to be, and he has not lost any weight), improved receptive language skills, and just have generally happier boys. Their little bodies are no longer being poisoned by the foods that they could not properly metabolize.
We will be on this diet indefinitely.

Good for you for seeking alternative diagnosis instead of filling a prescription. I love your site and I'm GFCF. Keep up the good work and know that it takes time for your boys' bodies to heal.
I haven't tried this diet (yet!), but I am certainly going to keep reading. My daughter turns 3 this months and has a few "autistic qualities" but has not been diagnosed. She is about 9 - 12 months behind in her speech as well. I keep delaying evaluation for her because she currently has no health insurance... I am going to take her soon for her Early CHildhood Screening. But this diet may be something to try! :)
Also, my sister's boy has a lot of food allergies and cannot eat so many things. He has been diagnosed with EE (Eosinophilic Esophagitis)and has to watch his diet very carefully. I referred my sister to this site and she is going to try some of the recipes, adapting them as necessary.
Thanks for doing this!
Erin, Thanks for starting this blog! Will, my almost 4 year old was dx as on the spectrum with PDD-NOS, which means that he has "autistic traits", but not enough traits to lump him in one group of Autism. We took him off of milk last month and he is doing great with rice milk. However, like you, I thought it would be o.k. to give him yogurt, because he is such a picky eater, and we noticed an immediate regression, so, no more milk products at all for us! He is so much more happier, speaks a lot more and is "more with us" and I really believe it is from the diet! Thanks again!
I am interested in trying this. I have a son with very mild Asperger's Syndrome and wonder if it can help him. Thanks for sharing.
My 4 year-old Autistic daughter has been GFCF for 10 months and GFCFSF for about 4. It is a challenge, but well worth it because we have seen such dramatic improvements in speech, cognitive and behavior. We have found a coconut milk yogurt and icecream from Turtle Mountain. Their website is http://www.turtlemountain.com/products/purely_decadent_Coconut_Milk.html
Hope this helps!
Thanks for starting this blog! I am just starting a dairy free diet with my oldest daughter and would like to move to GFCF in a matter of months for the whole family-Dh is very difficult to convince though! I have been working on this since summer!
I have four kiddos and they all would benefit from this. Thanks again, this is a wonderful resource.

Thanks for this blog. As an adult with a soy allergy I am always looking for recipes.
